I can't seem to come up with one consistent blog post for today, so I am going to spin out a few ideas about several alternate universes based on...well, different things.
The universe in which the Beatles songs take place...okay, yes, they are based on our universe, but if you were to extract from them a whole separate universe it would be... a little bizarre. You have a girl flying around, not with the stars as they actually are, but shining diamonds in the sky. You have yellow submarines, cause that makes sense. And paradise is an octopus's garden. Fun little world? Well, okay, I did like Across the Universe.
Moving to the next one. Dungeons and Dragons takes place in a multiverse. Think about this - the only thing that links all the universes in which every D&D game take place are the six basic stats - Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Wisdom and Charisma. Even at that, some of these homebrew universes come up with different stats. Sanity is one I've seen. Don't do that, by the way. Wisdom covers it, on the rare occasion it's needed. Sanity...it's for Cthulu.
Then there's the adorably terrifying one universe of Pixar. (For which I refer you to Jon Negroni's "The Pixar Theory") I've heard a number of conspiracy theories, but this is the most comprehensive and cohesive one ever - and it's about a fictional universe. The fun thing about it? It implies movies that still need to be made - the origin of supers, for example. Monsters are that are less monstrous. And where did those will-o-the-wisps come from? In any case, I think Pixar should run with it. Make the implied movies, feed your fanbase. (Mwa-ha-ha) Or, keep leaving the easter eggs, make the movies you want to make; your fans will figure it out.
Okay, next universe: Zelda and Link. These people are stuck in a loop. Magic sword, boomerang, shield, fairies. Fun, entertaining, sure. But come on, let's see a new take on the story, hm?
Sudden jump sideways: Star Wars. Interesting Universe - magic (Oh, sorry, "the force") is explained by midichlorians in the blood stream which provide power. When I saw the movie providing this unasked for answer, I could have sworn they said mitochondria, which actually are these critters that long ago invaded our cells and now provide energy to us. But magic (the force) from mitochondria (midichlorians), is actually not the weirdest part of that universe. Neither are the bizarre arrays of aliens or the plot holes, nor is the question of whether Solo shot first. The truly bizarre part is that it takes place long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. And humans are exactly the same. Exactly. Which implies time travel and the ability to cross quickly from one galaxy to the next.
Expect a death star any day now.
